Book cover design as well as interior typesetting design.
BUFF 2016
BUFF is the publication of the graduating class of Art and Art History, the joint program between the University of Toronto Mississauga and Sheridan College Trafalgar campus. This publication vets student artwork for submissions, and my 10-person class - Design 4 - was in charge of the entire publication from start to finish. I was deeply involved with the collection, photographing, and curation of student artwork, from sculptures to typography to paintings to digital art. Below are some examples of pages I set up, including the placement of artwork and artist tags.
BUFF 2016 cover design by Raphael Maturine.
One of the spreads I designed. The page on the left is typography, while the page on the right is a digital collage. I decided to pair these two together by thematically tying the word "Sphinx" on the left with the Egyptian iconography of the work on the right.
This spread documents a print screen sculpture by Deanna Restivo. It was a challenge to photograph this multi-layer artwork and display it in the best possible way. In the end the 8 tile gallery display best showed the front and back layers across these two pages.
A PROMISE AT THE SANDCASTLE
Cover art for A Promise at the Sandcastle by Sara Moselhy. Below are also graphic elements in Arabic that I created as headers for her novel interior.
Sara discussed with me themes from her novel, including a sandcastle, a scene where characters bind themselves to one another with a ribbon to declare their love, and a leaf gifted from one child to another as a promise to wed when they're older. Sara wanted a cover that was more spiritual and symbolic than the romantic elements in the story, so I created a vector that married all three of her prominent novel symbols sitting on a textured sand background as majority of her scenes involve beachsides.
BUMBLEBEE SEASON
Book cover and illustrations for Bumblebee Season by Andreea Mihai. Andreea's novel covers scientific literature on the bumblebee decline but written in a way so it's from the first person narrative of a queen bee. Her novel is meant to be an accessible read to the general audience in understanding the bumblebee life cycle and the importance of bumblebee preservation.
She wanted the cover to be something "beautiful and artistic so that people would pick it up without necessarily knowing what the novel is about." So I put my illustration skills to work!
The ink art I provided for Andreea. The graphic elements above and below the bumblebee were for Andreea's consideration to be used on the back.
The final cover. The bee illustration is comprised of an assortment of flowers and greenery that are the bumblebee's native food: Sunflowers, clovers, dahlias, lily-of-the-valleys, and forget-me-nots.
